MagnaBioSciences is determining the feasibility of a number of biodefense (BD) assays that have far reaching applications for the detection of BD agents.

Scientists have shown that the MICT® technology can be used in many of their existing handheld detection devices for BD agents. When used in this way, they have demonstrated superior sensitivity, speed and quantification. Staphylococcus Enterotoxin B (SEB) and Francisella tularensis are examples of BD agents for which the MICT® technology demonstrated significantly higher sensitivity than optically read devices.

Rapid detection of biological agents, such as SEB, becomes critical when there is a threat of attack producing an outbreak of an illness. In such occurrences, public health labs need to identify the causative agent as soon as possible to try and contain the outbreak.
